KIMSOOJA Unfolding is a breathtaking arrangement of color, cloth, nostalgia, and other mediums of expression. As you enter each room of the exhibition, your senses and emotions are thrust in different directions as your feelings overwhelm you. A mirrored room draped with hanging silk sheets and set to the sound of chanting monks is designed to create the illusion that the cloth goes on forever. Videos are projected of travelling trains in India, and a large blue pick up truck stacked high with bundles of brightly printed cloth—through her simplicity Kimsooja displays the beauty in everyday life. Her work is straightforward and delicate; precious items bundled in cloth, a picture of a woman in a crowd, a video of a woman in many places. In a world that moves a million miles a second, where we are constantly being barraged by attention grabbing media centers and the bustle of the city, Kimsooja’s work invites us to unfold the moments we experience and embrace them object by object, place by place, instead of letting them pass us by. Unfolding is not an exhibition that makes you furrow your brow but rather invites you into a peaceful state, and whose pieces provoke gentle thought about occurrences in life and the different ways they can be viewed.
KIMSOOJA Unfolding is at the Vancouver Art Gallery until January 26th, 2014.
