Review: The Oneiroscopist

Arriving at Astorino’s on Tuesday night, a small group of teens were gathered outside, looking like a bunch of extras in a mid-90s art film. The night started off slowly, with crowd members alternating between listening to the various artists play and standing near the doorway to chat. As the evening progressed, the venue became increasingly crowded with bodies, teenage hormones, and tangible excitement.

Beneath a mass of hair and accompanied by psychedelic projection, Jacob Sexsmith, performing under the name The Oneiroscopist, was there to celebrate the release of his Celestial EP. The product of a year’s work, it was evident that Sexsmith was more than overjoyed to share his music with those in attendance, and the audience seemed just as ecstatic. As more and more people danced themselves into an oblivion of self-expression, the venue took on an otherworldly quality which, paired with Sexsmith’s music, resulted in pure magic.

Consisting of songs off his newest release, as well as a few others not included on the EP, the set was perfectly paced. The crowd worked its way into a frenzy, and just as they reached an almost breakable point of intensity, Sexsmith carefully created a musical dénouement that resulted in a moment of breathlessness, only to bring the energy back to its previous swell of ferocity. Aptly named, the Celestial EP is undoubtedly ethereal, yet somehow manages to maintain a sound that could only come out of the rain drenched Pacific Northwest. The show achieved the long-strived-for balance of being easy to dance to and musically enriching, all while remaining unpretentious. Highlights from the set included “Techni©olorSeaWall≠Joggers” and “SHALLOW TIDE ft. UMBROSIA” off the Celestial EP, which are both worth a listen.

“I love you all,” Sexsmith repeated graciously throughout the set, between dancing and making futile attempts to keep the hair out of his eyes. Perhaps it was this sincere appreciation that created such a pleasant and uninhibited environment, allowing all those in attendance to experience a sense of togetherness. As the show reached its close the audience was left with both a feeling of contentment and slight melancholy at the thought of having to leave the venue. After the show, Sexsmith blended into the crowd, talking to the various attendees as well as the other artists who performed.

The Oneiroscopist managed to produce a show with all the euphoric effects of opiates but without the itch that comes along with them. For an experience much cheaper and far less dangerous than a heroin addiction, it delivered on every level.
